Triumph TR3 - HELP [lucas you know.........]

I DO need some help here.....
A TR-3,Lucas ammeter goes absolutely CRAZY[rapid full scale deflections, the needle a blur...]voltage regulator replaced, the same.....generator bench tested, the same......all wires checked, all ok.This ONLY happens at about 2000 rpm and above.Question...could this be a symptom of a fault in the ammeter itself? If not,...I DO need some help with this one.
